Joseph Showalter Smith (June 20, 1824 – September 28, 1884) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a Representative from the U.S. state of Oregon from 1869 to 1871. Early life Born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Smith moved with his farmer parents to Ohio and Indiana, where he attended the common schools. In 1844, at the age of 20, he was one of the early traveler on the Oregon Trail to Oregon, arriving in the spring of 1845 and settling in Salem, where he taught school, studied law, and was admitted to the bar. Political career In 1851, he sought election as Portland's first mayor, but lost by four votes to Hugh O'Bryant. In 1853, he moved to Olympia, Washington, and was elected to the Washington territorial house of representatives in 1856 and served as speaker. Joseph Fielding Smith Jr. (July 19, 1876 – July 2, 1972) was an American religious leader and writer who served as the tenth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1970 until his death in 1972. Joseph Smith (1736–1792) was a prominent Presbyterian minister in Western Pennsylvania. He is one of the founders of Washington & Jefferson College. Biography Early life Smith was born in Cecil County, Maryland, not far from the modern location of the Conowingo Dam. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1764 at the relatively mature age of 28. He was "tall, blond, slender, and had piercing eyes" and was "emotional to a degree we do not usually associate with Englishmen." Career He was first licensed to preach by New Castle Presbytery and accepted a call in Brandywine, Pennsylvania. Joseph Smith (1670–1756) was an English churchman and academic, Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford, from 1730. Early life The fifth son of William Smith, rector of Lowther, Westmorland, and younger brother of John Smith (1659–1715), he was born at Lowther, on 10 October 1670. On his father's death when he was five years old, his mother moved to Guisborough in Yorkshire, where he attended Guisborough grammar school. He went on to Durham School, and on 10 May 1689 he was admitted a scholar of The Queen's College, Oxford. In 1693 he was chosen a tabarder and graduated B.A. in 1694.
